Career-Creativity: A Fourth Approach

by Gopal Ramasammy-Cook (Career-Creative Coach, ZestWare)

I am continually evolving my perspectives on the nature of career-creativity harmony through research, discourse, reflection, and practice. In a previous post I postulated three possible approaches or meanings for career-creativity. To summarise, these approaches were:

  • Career as creative tool (like a paintbrush if we are to use a painting metaphor)

  • Career as artwork (like the painting itself)

  • Career as subject (like the artist's model or landscape being painted)

On further reflection, I believe there is a fourth possibility. This is the situation where the career serves as a patron of the artistic or creative endeavor. Here, the person's creative pursuits might not be directly related to her career, as in the case of a person who is an accountant and also a weekend sculptor. So what exactly is the relationship of the patron (career) to the creative endeavor? I believe that in its most healthy and harmonious form it is a reciprocal relationship where the career supports the creative endeavor financially and materially, and the creative endeavor energizes and inspires the career.
